Lakewood man beaten by eight others with bat

LAKEWOOD — A 36-year-old man was assaulted by eight men using a baseball bat as he walked his dog outside his Paris Court townhouse development, township police reported.

The incident happened just before midnight Saturday, said Lt. Steve Allaire of the township police.

Police received an anonymous call about the beating and found the bloodied victim on the sidewalk, Allaire said Monday. The victim is not being identified by authorities for his protection.

The man had injuries to his head and face, either from the bat or from being kicked and punched, police said. The victim was admitted to Ocean Medical Center in Brick and released Sunday, police said.

Authorities are asking for the public?s assistance in identifying the people involved, Allaire said. Police have already found the bat used in the attack as well as the vehicle used by the attackers who fled the scene, Allaire said.

Authorities are considering the possibility that this was a bias incident. The attackers were identified as Hispanic and the victim was not, Allaire said.

The dog was not injured in the attack and was found a short time later in the care of a neighbor. Anyone with information should contact Detective Nate Montgomery at 732-363-0200, ext. 5342.
