Retiree lends helping hand amid disasters

Retired life has hardly led to a relaxing life for St. Anne's Jackie DeLong.

The Red Cross volunteer is hard at work again, this time helping victims of the mass floodings that wreaked havoc in Colorado, where NBC News said the death toll had risen to eight.

She's been there working every day since last Tuesday, providing assistance in shelters in various cities.

"It's something that I just want to do to give back to the community," said DeLong, who retired as a registered nurse in 2010 and has helped with Red Cross since 2005.

It's the third disaster DeLong, 66, has attended to this year. She also helped in Texas and Oklahoma after devastating tornadoes.

On Tuesday, she was in Greeley, Colo., providing "mass care" to 50 clients — and anticipating the arrival of vice president Joe Biden, who visited the city Tuesday.

She might tend to basic health issues such as a cold, help with redressing a wound or send someone to a hospital if they're really ill.
