Desert tortoise faces threat from its own refuge
LAS VEGAS For decades, the vulnerable desert tortoise has led a sheltered existence.
Developers have taken pains to keep the animal safe. It's been protected from meddlesome hikers by the threat of prison time. And wildlife officials have set the species up on a sprawling conservation reserve outside Las Vegas.
But the pampered desert dweller now faces a threat from the very people who have nurtured it.
Federal funds are running out at the Desert Tortoise Conservation Center and officials plan to close the site and euthanize hundreds of the tortoises they've been caring for since the reptiles were added to the endangered species list in 1990.
Officials expect to put down more than half the 1,400 tortoises at the research and holding facility in the coming months in preparation for closure at the end of 2014.

Barnegat man faces child porn charges
BARNEGAT — A 27-year old township resident has been arrested on child pornography charges after a four-month investigation.
Eric Underwald was arrested Thursday morning at his Windward Drive residence. Underwald was charged with two counts of second-degree distribution of child pornography and a count of fourth-degree possession of child pornography. Charges were signed by Detective Dan Roske and approved by Assistant Prosecutor Kristin Pressman. Bail was set at $75,000, with no 10 percent option.
The investigation was the result of an online investigation conducted by the Ocean County Prosecutor?s High Tech Crime Unit and the Bergen County Prosecutor?s Office over the past four months, according to Al Della Fave, spokesman for the Ocean County Prosecutor?s Office.
The High Tech Crime Unit and the partnering agencies in the investigation executed search warrants at Underwald?s present residence on Windward Drive and a prior residence on Deer Run Drive in Barnegat.
The search for evidence pertaining to distribution of child pornography on the Internet resulted in the recovery of child pornography still pictures and movie files, Underwald?s computer and multiple electronic storage devices.
The investigation showed both searched locations were the source of several hundred images of child pornography on the Internet, Della Fave said
Underwald was also charged with fourth-degree resisting arrest and fourth-degree hindering apprehension after trying to flee police.
After threatening suicide during his arrest and processing, Underwald was transported by Barnegat Police Department to Southern Ocean Medical Center in Stafford for evaluation.
Woman arrested in Wall faces multiple drug charges
WALL — A Moorestown woman arrested here on a warrant Wednesday is now facing multiple drug charges, according to Sgt. Joseph Wilbert.
Colleen I. Begley, 32, was arrested Wednesday following a motor vehicle stop on Route 138 in the township. Officer Ian Hatch arrested her on a no-bail warrant for violation of probation, Wilbert said.
Authorities turned her over to the Camden County Sheriff?s Department and transported to the Camden County Jail.
Wall police seized Begley?s 2001 Chevy Trailblazer for further investigation and on Thursday, Hatch executed a search warrant on the vehicle, Wilbert said. Begley was then charged with possession of marijuana over 50 grams, possession of marijuana with intent to distribute and possession of crystal meth, he said.
Her bail was set at $12,000 by Wall Township Municipal Court Judge Joseph Defino, Wilbert said.

Wing-eating champ El Wingador faces NJ prison term
WOODBURY — A five-time Buffalo wing-eating champion known as El Wingador has pleaded guilty to a cocaine distribution charge in New Jersey.
Gloucester County prosecutors say William Simmons pleaded guilty Monday to possession with intent to distribute. The 51-year-old Woodbury Heights resident faces a seven-year prison when he?s sentenced in September. Prosecutors say they won?t object if he applies for an intensive supervision program that could shorten his sentence.
Several drug charges were filed against Simmons following a June 2012 traffic stop. Simmons admitted he was using ?a little bit? of cocaine at the time.
El Wingador last won Philadelphia?s Wing Bowl in 2005, when he gnawed through 162 chicken wings. The Wing Bowl was started as a way for Philadelphia sports fans to blow off steam before the Super Bowl.
