CAMDEN — A southern New Jersey man who hid his father?s death for 22 years so he could keep receiving his dad?s Social Security payments has been sentenced to a year in prison.
Michael Shelton of Pennsauken was also ordered Tuesday to pay $204,606 in restitution. He?ll also have to serve three years of supervised release once he?s freed.
Shelton pleaded guilty in April to theft of government funds.
When his father died in March 1990, Shelton purposely failed to notify the Social Security Administration. The agency discovered the death in June 2012 and learned the deceased was receiving $977 in monthly benefits.
Prosecutors say Shelton arranged for the checks to be direct deposited into a bank account in his father?s name. He then occasionally withdrew funds to pay for personal expenses.
