UPDATE: Employee injured in Kankakee tanker explosion airlifted to Chicago

A tanker explosion and subsequent fire Thursday at the Eastgate Industrial Park in Kankakee has left one employee hospitalized and caused major damage to the Turn-Key Environmental waste haulers building.

Fire officials would not release the name of the injured man but said he was airlifted to a hospital in Chicago after first being transported to Riverside Medical Center in Kankakee. Employees at the scene said none of the company's other eight staff members were in the immediate vicinity of the explosion.

"We haven't determined the cause of the explosion, and we can't offer an estimate of the damage yet," Kankakee Fire Captain Damon Schudt said. "The incident is still under investigation."

The explosion that blew a hole in the roof of the metal garage structure at about 2 p.m. was loud enough to be heard three miles away in Aroma Park. The business — located just off Illinois Route 17, east of the Interstate 57 interchange — has only been at this location since February, said workers who were watching the blaze.
