Emmy Awards 2013: Why this year is special

Stars from comedies, dramas and late-night TV are gearing up for the 65th Primetime Emmy Awards, set to air live Sunday starting at 8 p.m. ET on CBS.

Hosted by Neil Patrick Harris, the gala will be held for the sixth year at the Nokia Theatre in downtown Los Angeles.

"There's a lot of awards, so I thankfully don't have to do a lot of work," Harris told The Associated Press. "I get to come up with some funny one-liners."

When the Emmy Awards nominations were announced in July, "American Horror Story: Asylum" led the pack with the most honors -- 17. Close behind was "Game of Thrones" with 16 nods, while "Saturday Night Live" and the Liberace biopic "Behind the Candelabra" had 15 nominations each, including nods for the HBO movie's stars Michael Douglas and Matt Damon.

Mickey O'Connor, editor-in-chief of TVGuide.com, told CBSNews.com there's a "continuing trend of movie actors getting a series or moving into television and that's reflected in the nominees."

And this year's ceremony could make history. If the Netflix series "House of Cards" were to win best drama series, for example, it would mark the first time the Emmys recognizes a program delivered online in a major category. "House of Cards" also has Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright in the running for acting statuettes.

"I think everyone sort of expected that Netflix might break through...The Academy actually changed the rule in 2007 to allow for these types of online series but this is the first time that it's really broken through," said O'Connor.

DIY rap duo scoop indie music awards

4 September 2013 Last updated at 08:59 GMT Macklemore (pictured) and Ryan Lewis have sold out gigs around the world US rap duo Macklemore and Ryan Lewis have won two prizes at the Association of Independent Music (Aim) Awards for their self-released debut album.

The pair, whose songs Thrift Shop and Can't Hold Us are among the biggest hits of 2013, won most played new act and breakthrough of the year.

They were the only act to win more than one award at the ceremony in London.

Daughter picked up independent album of the year, Enter Shikari were named best live act and Warp won best indie label.

The prizes honoured acts and record companies operating outside the major label system.

Rapper Macklemore and producer Lewis did everything from recording the album to designing their artwork and directing their videos.

The xx took the award for "best difficult second album"

Their album The Heist came out last year and they have sold out tours and racked up millions of views on YouTube.

Rather than signing their rights and artistic control to a major label in a conventional deal, they released the album through their own label but enlisted the Alternative Distribution Alliance - an arm of the major Warner empire - to distribute and promote it.

"That's the interesting thing about where the music industry is right now," Macklemore, real name Ben Haggerty, told Billboard magazine in January.

"You have major labels that are willing to take unconventional approaches because the old model is crumbling in front of us."

Elsewhere at Tuesday's Aim ceremony, Mercury Prize-winning band The xx won the award for best difficult second album for Coexist and Vampire Weekend picked up track of the year for their song Diane Young.

Django Django's WOR was named best video and Sunderland group Frankie and the Heartstrings, who opened their own record shop in the town this summer, were crowned hardest-working band.

Meanwhile, BBC 6 Music DJ Steve Lamacq was honoured with a special recognition award, presented by singer Richard Hawley, for his 20 years on the BBC airwaves.

Fellow 6 Music presenter Gilles Peterson received the indie champion award, while singer-songwriter Billy Bragg was recognised for his outstanding contribution to music.

Oxford-based Alcopop! Records won best small label and Geoff Travis, founder of the Rough Trade label, was given the pioneer award.

Aim chief executive Alison Wenham said: "The high quality and diversity of all the winners in a very strong year for the sector points to a bright future for the UK music industry."

Mobo Awards shortlist announced

Newsbeat reporter The nominees for this year's Mobo Awards have been announced.

Wiley and Laura Mvula lead the way, both appearing in four categories.

The Mobos, the Music Of Black Origin awards, were launched in 1996 by Kanya King MBE and were the first music awards event in Europe to focus on urban music.

The winners of all the categories will be announced on 19 October at Glasgow's SSE Hydro venue as Mobo celebrates its 18th anniversary.

London MC Wiley is up against the likes of Tinie Tempah and Wretch 32 for best UK hip-hop/grime act.

He is also named in the best album category for The Ascent, while his recent track Reloaded featuring Chip is nominated for best single.

The rapper's fourth nomination is in the best male category alongside acts including Disclosure, Naughty Boy and Rudimental who are all nominated for three awards.

Jessie J received a nomination in the best female category

Singer-songwriter Laura Mvula's four nominations include ones for best album, for Sing to the Moon, and for best video for Green Garden.

Mvula, 27, is also nominated for the best R&B/soul act and is up against Jessie J, Jessie Ware, Lianne La Havas and Rita Ora for best female.

X Factor winner Jahmene Douglas, Etta Bond and Sam Smith, who appeared on Disclosure's Latch, are all in the running for the best newcomer award.

As well as announcing the winners of the awards, next month's ceremony will include live performances from several artists.

The likes of Rita Ora, Emeli Sande, Angel and Misha B have all performed in the past.

The best international act will be contested by artists including Kanye West, Justin Timberlake and Jay Z.

Other categories include best jazz, African, Gospel and reggae, which includes Sean Paul and Stylo G as nominees.

Hawkwind star honoured at awards

4 September 2013 Last updated at 09:37 GMT Brock is the only original member remaining in Hawkwind Dave Brock, of space rock veterans Hawkwind, has been honoured with a lifetime achievement award at the annual Progressive Music Awards.

The 72-year-old Devon-based musician, the only original member of the group, said it was a "great honour".

Other winners at the Kew Gardens ceremony, included Marillion, who were named band of the year.

The event, now in its second year, was hosted by BBC Newsnight presenter, and prog rock fan, Gavin Esler.

One of the world's longest-running groups, Hawkwind have undergone countless changes of personnel and musical styles.

Along the way, there have been astounding stage spectacles - notably the lavish Space Ritual tour - legal battles, bust-ups, reunions, and the untimely deaths of several members.

Former members and collaborators include Motorhead's Lemmy, science fiction writer Michael Moorcook, ex-Cream drummer Ginger Baker and the late guitarist Huw Lloyd Langton.

After picking up the lifetime achievement award, Brock said: "It's a hard business to be in, with many ups and downs, but I consider music to be an art form. So come on, you young pioneers, there is plenty of room for change in our music world."

Hawkwind, best known for songs such as Silver Machine, Urban Guerrilla and Master of the Universe (used in a recent Ford car advert), released their 27th album Onward in 2012.

Others honoured at the event - organised by Prog Magazine - included Jethro Tull's Ian Anderson, who was named "prog god" and guitarist Steve Hillage, who has played with Gong and System 7, who won the "visionary" award.

Jerry Ewing, editor of Prog Magazine, said: "From household names who've sold millions of albums to newer talent who we hope to see emulate their heroes with whom they've been sharing the room this evening.

"It all goes to show that in it's many varied guises, progressive music remains the most compelling of rock genres."

MTV Video Music Awards: What was the best performance?

Reunions, twerking and a few surprise collaborations took place at the MTV Video Music Awards Sunday night in Brooklyn, N.Y.

New York native Lady Gaga kicked things off with her first live performance on "Applause" from her upcoming album, "ARTPOP." Prior to the show, Gaga said that VMA producers always ask her to top her previous performance. Did she? Gaga, who performed on TV for the first time post-hip surgery, swapped costumes four times, ending the performance in bikini and a long blonde wig.

Miley Cyrus showed off both her sexy and quirky side (yes, she twerked and showed a lot of tongue) during her provocative performance of "We Can't Stop." Wearing a bodysuit featuring a cartooned character, she was joined by a host of dancing Boo teddy bears and a few booty dancers for a VMA-rendition of her summer hit "We Can't Stop." It was a head-scratching kind of performance as the former "Hannah Montana" bounced around the stage. The true surprise came when Robin Thicke appeared onstage to perform "Blurred Lines"; Cyrus joined him for the song and, at one point, gave the singer a lap dance.

"Miley better go get a pregnancy test after all that grinding," comedian Kevin Hart joked afterward.

Thicke, meanwhile, brought rappers 2 Chainz and Kendrick Lamar up for the remixed version of his new single "Give It 2 U."

Kanye West gave a dark performance of "Blood on the Leaves" from his "Yeezus" album, rapping onstage front of a black and white picture of a tree. His gal, Kim Kardashian, tweeted that it was the "best performance of the night."

Justin Timberlake -- the evening's Vanguard Award recipient -- received the most screen-time on Sunday as he plowed through many of his solo hits, including "SexyBack," "My Love," "Cry Me a River," "Senorita" and "Rock Your Body." And as expected, his *NSYNC co-horts joined him for snippets of two tracks: "Girlfriend" and "Bye Bye Bye."

Some of the other evening's performers included Drake, Bruno Mars and Macklemore & Ryan Lewis.

Katy Perry wrapped the two-and-a-half-hour show, performing her new hit single, "Roar," in a boxing ring set up underneath the Brooklyn Bridge.

MTV Video Music Awards: What was the best performance?

Reunions, twerking and a few surprise collaborations took place at the MTV Video Music Awards Sunday night in Brooklyn, N.Y.

New York native Lady Gaga kicked things off with her first live performance on "Applause" from her upcoming album, "ARTPOP." Prior to the show, Gaga said that VMA producers always ask her to top her previous performance. Did she? Gaga, who performed on TV for the first time post-hip surgery, swapped costumes four times, ending the performance in bikini and a long blonde wig.

Miley Cyrus showed off both her sexy and quirky side (yes, she twerked and showed a lot of tongue) during her provocative performance of "We Can't Stop." Wearing a bodysuit featuring a cartooned character, she was joined by a host of dancing Boo teddy bears and a few booty dancers for a VMA-rendition of her summer hit "We Can't Stop." It was a head-scratching kind of performance as the former "Hannah Montana" bounced around the stage. The true surprise came when Robin Thicke appeared onstage to perform "Blurred Lines"; Cyrus joined him for the song and, at one point, gave the singer a lap dance.

"Miley better go get a pregnancy test after all that grinding," comedian Kevin Hart joked afterward.

Thicke, meanwhile, brought rappers 2 Chainz and Kendrick Lamar up for the remixed version of his new single "Give It 2 U."

Kanye West gave a dark performance of "Blood on the Leaves" from his "Yeezus" album, rapping onstage front of a black and white picture of a tree. His gal, Kim Kardashian, tweeted that it was the "best performance of the night."

Justin Timberlake -- the evening's Vanguard Award recipient -- received the most screen-time on Sunday as he plowed through many of his solo hits, including "SexyBack," "My Love," "Cry Me a River," "Senorita" and "Rock Your Body." And as expected, his *NSYNC co-horts joined him for snippets of two tracks: "Girlfriend" and "Bye Bye Bye."

Some of the other evening's performers included Drake, Bruno Mars and Macklemore & Ryan Lewis.

Katy Perry wrapped the two-and-a-half-hour show, performing her new hit single, "Roar," in a boxing ring set up underneath the Brooklyn Bridge.
