Two men arrested in Wawa parking lot on drug possession in Barnegat

BARNEGAT — Two men were arrested when they made a drug transaction in front of the township police narcotics unit by Wawa on West Bay Avenue, police reported.

Jose Lopez, 47, of Barnegat was charged with fourth-degree possession of marijuana over 50 grams, Lt. Keith Germain said in a news release. Lopez was processed and released pending a court date.

Arturo Bueno-Ocotoxtle, 29, of Lakewood was charged with fourth-degree possession of marijuana over 50 grams, third-degree possession of marijuana over one ounce with intent to distribute and third-degree distribution of over one ounce of marijuana, Germain said. Bueno-Ocotoxtle?s bail was set at $50,000 and he was held at the Ocean County jail in Toms River.

Police determined Bueno-Ocotoxtle was in the United States illegally and a detainer was placed on him by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

On July 24 at 7 p.m., officers were looking for illegal activity near Wawa when they observed Bueno-Ocotoxtle distribute a quarter pound of marijuana to Lopez, Germain said. Officers then placed both men under arrest and recovered marijuana and money.

The Asbury Park Press asked the Barnegat Township Police Department for a photo of the suspects, but they did not respond to the request by deadline. State law allows authorities discretion in releasing suspect photos, but they often refuse to do so, saying they are prohibited by the Ocean County Prosecutor?s Office.
