Two villages and one township in Kankakee County are officially opposing a landfill in their communities and have vowed to take legal action — two months after the county lifted its ban on landfills and hired a $240,000-per-year consultant to help bring a new waste facility here.
Elected boards for Sammons Point, Grant Park and Pembroke Township have in recent weeks passed symbolic resolutions opposing any new landfills and promised to sue the county to block any proposals.
The Sammons Point board passed its resolution Monday night.
"Kankakee County has no landfill capacity crisis at the present time," reads the resolutions, which are nearly identical for all three jurisdictions. "The sustainability of a local landfill will undoubtedly require the importing and dumping of solid waste from jurisdictions and communities outside of Kankakee County, i.e., the City of Chicago, resulting in hundreds of round trips daily to dump waste at the landfill, increasing air pollution and truck traffic throughout the local region.
