Peotone man, 25, charged with vandalizing Monee cemetery

A 25-year-old Peotone man has been charged with vandalizing a cemetery in Monee.

Thomas W. Nicholls, the third person suspected of damaging headstones at St. Paul Cemetery, was arrested on July 13 by Monee police on a Will County warrant for domestic violence, said Monee Police Chief John Cipkar.

Over a two-day period in November 2012, at least 28 headstones were damaged, Cipkar said. The cemetery's website, meanwhile, lists more than 60 headstones that were damaged.

Headstones at St. Paul's date back to the mid-1850s.

Two others were arrested in May in connection with the vandalism: Justin Qunell, 18, of Monee, and a juvenile whose name was not released.

Nicholls is expected to appear in court on Aug. 26.
