Ex-NJ justice named chair of ethics panel

TRENTON — A former New Jersey Supreme Court justice ousted by Gov. Chris Christie has been given a new role by state lawmakers.

John Wallace has been named the chairman of a legislative committee on ethical standards.

Senate President Steve Sweeney announced the appointment Wednesday, saying Wallace has a reputation for being independent, even-tempered and scholarly.

Assembly Speaker Sheila Oliver also signed off on the appointment.

Christie declined to re-nominate Wallace to the state?s top court in 2010 after an initial seven-year term. Christie and Sweeney have been in a standoff ever since about court appointments.

On the committee that reviews ethics complaints about lawmakers, Wallace is replacing Alan Rosenthal, a longtime Rutgers professor who died last month.
