NEWARK — A former Hoboken municipal employee will not have to serve a jail term for illegally breaking into Mayor Dawn Zimmer?s email account.
Patrick Ricciardi was instead ordered Friday to serve five years of probation.
Ricciardi had pleaded guilty in March to accessing a computer without authorization, intercepting wire and electronic communications, and disclosing the intercepted communications. The Hoboken resident had faced up to 15 years in prison.
The veteran city employee served as chief information technology officer for the mayor?s office.
Federal prosecutors say Ricciardi created an archive file where he re-routed emails that had arrived in Zimmer?s account. He forwarded some of the emails to other current and former city officials.
