EATONTOWN — A vote is expected tonight on an agreement that would allow the borough to lease the Tinton Falls courtroom, but would also result in layoffs of four borough court employees.
The agreement and resolution to issue layoff notices to court personnel is on the borough council?s agenda for tonight?s meeting and was approved by Tinton Falls council last week.
Both Eatontown and Monmouth Beach will pay Tinton Falls a total $150,000 annually under a multi-year contract to lease the facility and utilize Tinton Falls court staff and computers. Eatontown will pay $100,000 and Monmouth Beach, $50,000 a year under the agreement. The action does not consolidate or merge the three courts.
If approved by the council, two court employees would be laid off Sept. 13, which is the effective date of the agreement. The court administrator and deputy administrator would be laid off Nov. 1.
Eatontown officials say that, under the new agreement, the 1960s-era borough hall won't be tied up on court days. Eatontown and Monmouth Beach currently share court services in Eatontown's courtroom and also have to utilize the council chambers on court days. Tinton Falls opened a new municipal building and courtroom in 2007.
Eatontown police would also be responsible for providing security in Tinton Falls when Eatontown?s court is in session. The council meeting is at 7 p.m. at borough hall.
