ASBURY PARK — Part of the roof collapsed Sunday morning at a restaurant on the north promenade of Asbury Park?s Convention Hall, officials said.
The restaurant, Anchor?s Bend, was preparing for a baby shower when the 12-foot-by-6-foot slab of concrete fell from the ceiling, Fire Marshal Garrett Giberson of the Asbury Park Fire Department said. The slab was about 4 inches thick, but no one was injured.
?It?s very lucky a large group of people were not in there at the time,? Giberson said. ?If people had been in there, they could have been seriously injured or killed.?
Both the north and south promenades were evacuated, he said.
An Asbury Park construction official determined that a structural engineer needs to evaluate sections of the building, and Anchor?s Bend will remain closed pending the structural engineer?s report, said Giberson. The eastern-most section of the south promenade, Beach Bar, reopened and the Grand Arcade is open as well, he said.
The Asbury Park Fire Department responded to the call.
