Kankakee fire station open house

Kankakee Township Fire Station 1 is having an open house from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the township's fire protection district station at 2215 S. Kensington Ave., Kankakee, on Saturday.

There will be a bounce house for the kids, free food and drinks for everyone, a fire engine dedication at the 11 a.m. ceremony, a presentation by Illinois State Fire Marshal, Larry Matkaitis, and a presentation by state Rep. Kate Cloonen, D-Kankakee.

Spice of Life raises $3,500 for Harbor House

The Spice of Life variety show this past weekend raised $3,500, which will all go to the local domestic violence shelter and its life-changing efforts.

After taking 2012 off to rebuild the program, the show was back with 29 talented acts taking to the stage at Bradley-Bourbonnais Community High School's auditorium in a program themed "Broadway Review."

Plans are underway for next year's show on Aug. 8-9, 2014. It will be the 31st year for The Spice of Life variety show featuring local talent volunteering their time and efforts, said Bonnie Brewer, the show's director.

Donations can be sent to The Spice of Life, 860 N. River Drive, Kankakee, IL 60901.

Boarded-up house collapses in NJ, traps squatter

TRENTON — Firefighters in Trenton, N.J., have rescued a homeless man who was buried by debris when a boarded-up house partly collapsed.

Fire officials say the roof and a wall of the abandoned three-story building came crashing down early Thursday.

They say the homeless man had been sleeping on the porch. It took them several hours to get him out.

Fire Chief David Turner tells The Times of Trenton the man was incoherent before being taken away by ambulance. He didn?t know the nature of his injuries.

Turner says the house, surrounded by vacant lots, was being used by squatters even though it was marked as hazardous.

The city brought in heavy equipment to pull away rubble before searching for other possible victims.

Obama, Clinton meeting for lunch at White House

WASHINGTON — It?s the most talked about lunch in the U.S. capital.

President Barack Obama and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton are dining privately at the White House Monday. While it is not the first time the pair have seen each other since Clinton left the administration earlier this year, each of their get-togethers is closely analyzed.

That is because Clinton is considered a leading contender to replace Obama, though she has not said whether she will launch another presidential campaign.

The president is also being watched for signs of who he will support in the race to replace him. Vice President Joe Biden is also believed to be considering a run for the White House, potentially leaving Obama caught between two of his closest advisers.
